Remember how terrifyingly awesome the giant tarantula from Wild Wild West was? Besides the freakin’ hugeness and fireball spitting part of it, I always thought the joint articulations and hydraulics were pretty cool. Based on kinetic sculptures of Theo Jansen, a team at the University of Louisiana have taken us one step closer to robotic arachnid hell with their Cajun Crawler, a Segway-esque moving platform that uses mechanical legs to move around.

Never mind that they’ve built a set of legs to do the work of your own set of legs, but their feet of engineering is impressive all the same.

 


I, for one, welcome our new terrifying robot walker overlords…
