Tesla shocked the auto industry when its all-electric Roadster was put into production last year, and after its release, it’s been quite well-received, with its 248 hp engine and great handling, no doubt as a result of its Lotus Elise heritage. Tesla showed the world that electric cars don’t have to be boring - but, as it turned out, do have to be expensive, as the Roadster and the subsequent Roadster Sport ran upwards of $120,000.

Enter the Model S, a four door sports sedan that’s nearing production - with a 0-60 time of 5.6 seconds and a healthy 160 mile range (larger capacity packs will be released in the future), the most important part of the Model S is the price - $50,000. Understandably, this still puts it out of the price range of most average American families, but for local Silicon Valley millionaires, this might just be the combination of eco-friendly sportiness that they’ve been looking for.

CEO Elon Musk comments that the $50,000 price tag really isn’t all that much when you factor in fuel costs - assuming an eventual $4 per gallon of gas, the Model S comes out to an equivalent of about a $35,000 gasoline car, as it only costs about $5 to drive 230 miles with the Model S.

More than that, I gotta say… electric or not, that’s a pretty sweet looking ride.
