Microsoft has quietly announced the addition of another startlingly appropriate Windows 7 feature: the previously dubbed Virtual Windows XP is now officially Windows XP Mode (XPM) and will be shipping with the release candidate and the retail version. Microsoft seems to have finally gotten off their high horse and started listening to consumers - even if this means allowing them to stick with an operating system released almost eight years ago.

While Windows 7 has already shown itself to be the lightweight, speedy operating system that Vista should have always been, its close visual proximity to the catastrophically bloated Vista may still send potential adopters running back to the familiar green pastures of XP. Conceding their defeat, Microsoft has utilized their virtual PC engine to load XP, which will allow users to not only make their desktop and windows look like the familiar XP of old, but also run XP programs side-by-side with programs native to Windows 7. In this sense it’s not unlike Mac OS X’s Parallels (the ubiquitous Boot Camp allows native booting into Windows), but now users don’t have to freak out about the lack of a delete key, or a second physical mouse button, for that matter.

The utilization of XP Mode solves a crucial problem that’s plagued Vista and early beta versions of Windows 7 - compatibility with XP. Those programs that just wouldn’t load for some ungodly reason should now be 100% functional in XP Mode, quelling the fears of would-be adopters and giving early-adopting avengers an increased sense of security.

Wait, does this mean the XP Blue Screen of Death is making its return too? Only time will tell…
