If you’re a student, you’d wish you lived in Maine. Why? Because Main has become the only state in the United States to commit to a notebook for every public school student from grades 7-12. (Details after the break)

The Maine Department of Education has ordered more than 64,000 Macbooks and will be ordering 7,000 more for their students and faculty. This new program was extended for High School students because of the success it had with Middle School students. Maine Education Commissioner Sue Grendon had this to say:

“We have seen incredible success, with our middle schools showing increased student engagement and achievement with (Maine Learning Technology Initiative) in place, and we want to bring this same opportunity to our high schools,” Gendron said in a statement. “This is not just about technology–it’s about using the technology to support education.”

Apple will provide Maine public schools with educational software, development and repair as part of the deal. The students will be required to return their Macbook at the end of every school year but will be allowed to use them at home.
