Dell has recently announced they’re planning to turn netbooks into GPS devices. They want their netbooks to compare to the GPS capabilities of Garmin and Tom-Tom.

Alan Sicher, senior wireless product manager at Dell, said, ““Smartphones already have GPS capabilities. We are now bringing it to netbooks so the devices know where you are and can help you where you want to go.”

The idea of having GPS on netbooks is not a bad one at all, although many might not jump on the opportunity. Having GPS capabilities on a netbook might come in handy outside of cell phone range or for international travelers who’s roaming costs might be too high on their cell phone plans.

Dell says the option to turn a netbook into a GPS device will be offered for $69 when ordering a Dell Mini 10 netbook through their site. Dell’s netbook feature comes at a opportune time, when many users are looking outside of the traditional GPS devices. Tom-Tom recently announced they’re releasing a iPhone app that will provide turn-by-turn direction.

Don’t expect Dell’s GPS option nebooks to sell out. The GPS market is getting crowded with all the options that will be offered by various companies.
