LG, the world’s 3rd largest manufacturer of cellular phones has put Samsung and all its competitors on notice, they’re gunning for the #2 spot and they’re sure they’ll get there by 2012. LG’s head of the mobile division, Ahn Seung-kwon told the Korean Yohap News Agency some pretty interesting stuff.

LG has a pretty good track record with their mobile division but Ahn Seung-kwon’s interview highlighted a few key strategies they want to implement:

- They went to be the #2 spot in global cell phone shares by 2012. If LG keeps at its pace and introduces a solid line up smartphones it’s possible, unless of course the prophecy comes true and the world ends by then.

-LG is planning to release a “Black Label” phone directly competing against Apple’s iPhone in the fourth quarter of this year. I’m stoked to see what they come up with. “Black Label” sounds like a phone made for Ninjas only.

-They want to introduce high end phones similar to Nokia’s Vertu. Although this is an area that doesn’t result in higher sales, LG must know something we don’t for them to get into this market.

With all this news, LG is poised to make a big splash in the next few years. They still need to work on a few things, like designing better phones, but if they can tweak certain things, they can try to move past Samsung into the second spot.
