The success of the iPhone 3GS might be spurring a new feature in upcoming iPods, a video camera. According to inside reports at TechCrunch, Apple has ordered a massive amount of cheap cameras, similar to the ones included in the iPhone 3GS.

The TechCrunch source says they know it’s for the iPod because of the size of the order. Only iPod parts could be ordered in so many. Apple couldn’t realistically sell that many iPhones within the year.

Macrumors has updated their site with pictures of possible iPod and iPod Touch cases that suggest there is going to be iPods with a camera. If the iPods and the Touch end up getting video camera feature, which makes sense because they’re running the same if not similar software to the iPhone 3GS, Apple will be taking a bite out of the smaller niche video camera companies like Flip and Creative.

Flip and Creative’s Vado have been extremely popular over the years with their small digital devices thay feature one touch recording and uploading to a computer through its included USB. But the Apple software on the 3GS allows video recording, edits and uploads to YouTube, all in one package without the need for a computer. On top of that, the price of the iPod Touch and Flip video cameras are the same, $239. While Flip and Creative Vados offer better camera quality with their HD video capability, I would easily take the convenience of one touch editing and upload for the same price.
