This Friday, July 10th will mark the one year anniversary of Apple’s App Store. I don’t know what the iPhone would be without the App Store and I don’t know what people did with their phones before that besides just making phone calls.
The App Store was the beginning of a new era for mobile smartphones. Cell phone manufacturers decided to churn out their own version of the app store for their line of phones. Blackberry’s introduced App World, Palm has the App Catalog while Nokia calling theirs, Ovi.
One year later, none of the other companies have been able to match Apple’s success of the App Store. And that’s because Apple has three distinctive advantages, having outside developers build most of the apps saving Apple’s engineers time, energy and money. The second reason is the following Apple garnered. Why would someone, who has access to so many different kinds of apps, from entertainment, finance to daily tasks, leave that for another company offering less? And the last, the ability to download the apps right from the iPhone/iPod Touch, without the need for a computer.
Throughout the past year, I’ve gone through a number of apps and enjoyed most of them for what they do. The best part about the app store is the ease of use and downloads. I’ve used the Nokia and Palm Catalog but it’s hard to compete against something so easy to use. It takes seconds to download the apps and they’re ready to use right away.
The iPhone App Store currently has over 56,000 apps and last month had its 1 billionth download. All that in one year. As consumers we’d love to see the competition catch up but for now, let’s enjoy what the App Store has provided for us, a plethora of useful and entertaining applications, some we cannot live without.
Do you have any apps that you couldn’t imagine living without?

For me, Holdem, My twitter apps, and Evernote… It is amazing how fast the app store has grown, and it is one of the things that truly sets the iPhone apart from the so called competition.
