The State of New Jersey is implementing a new law on its drivers that they cannot operate GPS systems while driving because this could pose a threat to themselves and others. The last time a law such as this one was in early 2008 when New Jersey joined other states to enact hand held cell phone bans.
This idea was brought to the attention of the New Jersey lawmakers when a democratic assemblyman, Harvey Smith introduced a bill that only allowed voice activated GPS systems. Drivers that did not abide by such law would be fined $100 which is also the same penalty for using cell phones. Lawmakers are working together to propose another law that would also ban texting while driving. It seems that peoples common sense and powers of reasoning are just not enough anymore, the government is stepping in and taking control.
Personally I don’t see what the big deal is with a GPS system. I had one in my car and it was never a distraction for me while driving. At the same time, this could lead to the end of the mobile GPS on cell phones. If cars aren’t allowed to have non voice activated GPS systems when driving, then how will anyone be able to use a cell phone for GPS directions.

Matt said: is it just a ban on programming in a location while driving or having them in general?
I believe its programming them, which i think some people do while driving
Yet another dumb rule from the asses in Trenton that banned the cooking of eggs “over-easy” in restaurants. The corrupt democratic governor and state legislature are just looking to give their military arm (the morons we know as state police) another weapon to raise revenues by creating another traffic violation.
