Social networking took a huge leap forward last week when GDGT was launched. For most of you who have no idea what gdgt.com is all about, then here’s a quick intro about the site. It’s created by Peter Rojas, the genius behind Gizmodo then Engadget, the two biggest gadget sites in the blogosphere. (My profile and details after the break)
Rojas and a colleague teamed up to create a gadget nerds dream: a place to discuss, create lists of gadgets you’ve had, want or currently own. I signed up on launch day last week, then they were having trouble handling all the traffic coming their way. It took me some time to get used to the site but it’s a fairly easy site to get used to.
It’s not like other gadget blogs, this site asks the users for reviews on thousands of products. There’s also a message option to ask other users for help with various gadgets or asking for recommendations on a product.
After spending some time on the site, it felt like a cross between CNet, Twitter and Facebook. You can add friends ( and gadgets) like Facebook, message people like Twitter (although there’s no real time option yet) and there’s reviews like CNet. GDGT provides user reviews instead of their own reviews by paid writers. User reviews are a huge deal because consumers trust others like themselves instead of a professional working for a company reviewing products.
This has definitely become one of the sites I’ve been spending a lot of my free time on. It’s also been taking me back on some of the crazy gadgets I’ve owned over the years. Ahh the beauty of nostalgia..
