Last week after writing the Google Voice post, I wondered if there were any good apps to utilize the Google Voice for my iPhone. My question was answered by the folks over Riverturn, who sent me a copy of their updated VoiceCentral app. The application looks much more refined than their previous version and almost mirrors the iPhone’s Phone settings. (Screen shots and more details after the break).
The app launched and logged in extremely quickly, under 3 seconds with Wi-Fi. (3G was a little longer but quick nonetheless). After putting in all your info, pick a color scheme from the 4 colors; grey, blue, green and red, and you’re ready to go.
The color scheme is great, it’s not too bright and slightly on the dark side. The only problem I had with the color scheme was the dark background when texting. It was somewhat hard to see the background when I received texts.
As you can see the app has the standard calling touch screen buttons: voicemail, history, contacts, keypad, settings. When pressing contacts, it retrieves all your contacts from the iPhone and displays it for you.
Making calls or sending a text was extremely easy. As you know, to make outgoing calls, Google Voice calls you before you can call someone else. You have to answer the call and then it redirects the call to your contact.
Without this app, you have to call yourself, then dial the number of the person, which is a nuisance especially if you don’t know the number.
Sending texts was fairly easy as well. When you go into keypad, on the bottom left hand, there’s the SMS option, tap it and you’re ready to send out text messages. The first time I opened up the application, a text window did not pop up. After relaunching the app, the problem did not occur again. it could just be something going on with my iPhone 3G at the moment, so I just ignored it.
The voicemail feature was reminiscent of visual voicemail on the iPhone. You can see who called you and delete them as you like. There’s also a speaker phone option on the upper right hand.
All in all this is a great app if you have Google Voice and want to take advantage of its features. I don’t know what application, if any, Google is planning to roll out, but Riverturn has a great app on their hands. Plus they have great customer support. I ask about the app on a weekend and received multiple replies within an hour or so.
The one feature I wish it had was push notification. Push notification would make this a killer app, but I guess I can’t ask for everything. Even without the push notification feature, it’s a must have app for Google Voice users.
You can buy the app at the iTunes App Store here.
