If you haven’t heard, Apple rejected the Official Google Voice app for the iTunes App Store. Many in the internet world are upset at Apple and AT&T for it. Twitter users were able to voice their frustration using the social network.
Twitter users aren’t the only ones angry, bloggers are also upset and voicing their opinion. Here’s a few blogs that expressed their opinions.
The Var Guy says that Apple needs to stop being so shortsighted or else people might end up moving to platforms like the Google’s Android…
“…Apple is protecting its AT&T relationship by blocking Google Voice from the Apple App Store — and artificially limiting opportunities for VARs, channel partners and customers.
Apple better be careful: The VAR Guy loves his iPhone … but not the bloated monthly AT&T service fee that comes with it. If our resident blogger falls for Google Voice, he might wind up looking at a smart phone that runs Google Android instead.” thevarguy
PC World wonders if people will continue to stick with Apple if they don’t open up the platform…
” A closed platform may provide the more immediate financial advantage for a provider. In the long run, though, one has to hope a system that caters to customers’ interests will pay off. So far, the positives of the iPhone have largely been able to outweigh the negatives of its closed system. The real question is, in the increasingly competitive mobile market, how long Apple will be able to maintain that balance.” PC World
TUAW says developers might jump ship to another platform if Apple continues to yank apps to preserve their relationship with AT&T and continue with their closed platform…
“No one expects Apple, or AT&T for that matter, to act against their own interests. At the same time, how far will they alienate their developer base with moves like this one that showcase how hard it is to create a business plan for a completely closed platform? For now developers continue pounding at the doors to get into the iPhone developer program. But with a history of capricious rejections, an opaque review process, and the possibility that your accepted application might be yanked (as were both GV Mobile and VoiceCentral), more and more developers will be getting the message that Apple’s iPhone platform is too risky to develop for.” TUAW
TechCrunch is questioning why Apple is giving into AT&T’s demands, which they claim is behind the Google Voice app ban on the iPhone…
“…All the more upsetting is that this comes from the company that Steve Jobs built. The company that once made record labels bow to a flat 0.99 pricing structure for years longer than they would have liked is now screwing customers because AT&T asked them to. They’re trying to limit what I can and can’t run on my mobile phone — a phone whose marketing is largely based on its extensibility…” - CrunchGear

This is sad but hopefully all parties will redeem themselves.
