Eric Schmidt Resigns From Apple’s Board of Directors, What’s Next For The Google vs Apple Fight?

Eric Schmidt, the man who sat on both Apple and Google’s board of directors, resigned from Apple today. Does this surprise anyone? With Google entering Apple’s space on the OS front with Google, and Android mobile software, it was a matter of time before something gave. And let’s not forget the craziness going on with the Google App being rejected from the Apple App store.

Schmidt was in a tough position, being objective about interests and projects when you’re sitting at the held of two companies starting to compete against each other. Schmidt’s departure from Apple will only strengthen Google’s mobile phone department. Most startphones are still trailing Apple in ease of use and software, but Google can change that with Schmidt no longer on their board of directors.

I wonder how Schmidt felt about Apple rejecting the Google Voice app from the iTunes App store. It was Friday when Google brought the FCC to Apple’s door and a few days later Schmidt is longer with Apple. Google had been promoting Voice as their next big product, but now it won’t be on one of the biggest mobile platforms. Imagine how pissed off the folks at Google were after the Voice app rejection, not to mention how angry Steve Jobs would have been at Google for calling the FCC. Whetever the reason for the breakup, it was inevitable with both companies vying for the same tech space. Google wants a piece of Apple’s space while Apple wants to keep a tight reign on their software and operation. Hopefully this will mean both of these companies go at each other with everything they have, making the consumers the winners in the end.
