All car companies claim to have the best fuel efficiency in their cars. Well, the sad truth has been revealed. In a study conducted at the University of Michigan, fuel efficiency has only advanced 3 miles per gallon in a total of 80 years. You read correctly, 80 years!
The experiment conducted by Michael Sivak and Omer Tsimhonia of the University of Michigan consisted of fuel studies for the entire US fleet, ranging from cars, trucks, motorcycles and buses. Ford claims that their Model T once had 25 miles to the gallon and by 1923, the average of the entire US fleet was 14 MPG.
From 1935, fuel efficiency went on the decline to a surprising 11.9 MPG and the search for alternatives were lost. When the fuel crisis in the 70’s hit, car companies were forced to make a change in fuel efficiency and people had to change their ways to better themselves and lower their carbon footprint. After this sudden move to advance, fuel efficiency increased to 16.9 gallons by 1991. Sadly, by 2006, fuel efficiency only increased to a mere 17.2 MPG, in spite of all the environmental awareness raised. By Sivak’s and Tsimhonia’s estimates, in order for the US to reduce their fuel consumption by only 10%, fuel effiecincy would have to rise 2% for the entire american fleet of cars, trucks, buses, and mtorcyles. Keep in mind that it took 15 years for a 0.3% change to take place so to increase a whole 2%, it may take a while.
