Whenever I log into my Facebook account, I find myself leaving within a few seconds. Something about the site just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. It probably has something to do with the fact that I’m no longer in college and keeping up with my friend’s drunken escapades are no longer a priority, nor do I care about that hot girl from one of my history classes freshmen or what the heck she does. So, what I to do to keep up with my friends when I need to find out what they’re doing or updates on their daily concerns/issues? I turn to Twitter.
I find myself Twittering about random things when I’m watching TV or a game. Most of my friends are on Twitter as well, so it turns into a conversation between us about a Yankees game or Entourage, one of my favorite shows. That reminds me, during the last episode of Entourage this past Sunday, Vince (Adrian Grenier) asks his friend Eric (Kevin Connolly) “How come you’re not on this Facebook thing?”. E responds with “because I’m an adult, how come you are?”.
Hmm Has Facebook turned into the new Myspace? Are all the signs pointing to the end of Facebook? Probably not but it does make you wonder if celebs continue to bash it, will it slowly start fading into obscurity? Who knows, but I know I’ve been using it less and less. I used to have a friends list of over 600 but then I realized, most of these people I had met only once or twice in college and never really talk to them anymore or care for their updates. After removing all these unnecessary “friends”, I was down to a very small number and I was fine with that. Come to think of it, the smaller number of people are the friends I already keep in contact through text, IM and Twitter.
Uploading pictures was the other feature I used a lot on Facebook. I wanted to share the places I went and the activities I did with friends. But I stopped uploading things to Facebook once I signed up for a Flickr account. Flickr let’s me upload pictures by sending them in an email, while Facebook requires me to be on my computer or use the Facebook iPhone app (uploads one at a time while Flickr can upload multiple pictures through the email method).
While Facebook continues to grow as the biggest social networking site in the world, I’m no longer interested in what Facebook has to offer me. Facebook has just turned into a slightly advanced version of MySpace, where most people have hundreds of friends they never talk to.
Are you a fan of Facebook, Twitter or MySpace? Which one are you using more often than the others?
