Paparazzi don’t always get the best shot of celebrities because the flash gives off a glare or they get noticed by the celebrities. Well, thanks to researchers Dilip Krishnan and Rob Fergus, we have the invisible flash which can take a clear shot without the annoying flickering lights.

The researchers started with a Fuji IS Pro DSLR camera. They simple removed the IR-Filter. The IR-filter is what lowers the frequency range of the camera to match the range of our color perception. Next, they removed the UV absorbent coating (where the flash comes from) and there you have it. Of course, there were some things along the way that we didn’t mention but we’re covering the basics.

Cameras with the invisible flash don’t take the best pictures, mainly because some portions of the lens still take in UV and IR lighting and mess up pictures taken in the dark. Krishnan and Fergus are working to create a smaller flash that take in UV and IR LEDs. This would give them more control of the pulse duration and spectral emissions.

This technology could be available to the Mobile phone market when improved further. This would increase standard VGA cameras dramatically and would allow smart phone users to have the power of a digital camera in their phones. This has the potential to be a breakthrough technology for cameras.
