We’ve all heard of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Technology), more widely known as the chip put into animals to track them. Well, Yelamarthi and two senior engineering students from Michigan University have developed the SmartCane for the visually impaired designed with RFID technology. The SmartCane can search and find electrical navigation tags installed in buildings, which can help the visually impaired across the street.

The SmartCane also has an Ultrasonic sensor which has a small navigation system in the sling bag that the user must carry. When the sensor detects something in the way of the user, it tells them by giving them a voice command from a speaker located in the bag’s strap. For people with both sight and hearing impairments, Yelamarthi’s team has created a vibrating glove to work with the rest of the system to guide them. The SmartCane still has a lot of improvements that need to be made but at least Yelamarthi’s team have created a base for others to always improve on.
