Listening to a voicemail has almost become a thing of the past. I rarely listen to a voicemail and most work related stuff either gets done through an email or during face to face meets. But when Google Voice finally goes public, voicemail will become a new communication tool.
Google Voice allows callers to leave a voicemail in your inbox, which you can listen to on any computer or read it through the transcribe feature. The transcribtion feature is a very neat feature when its done right. For the most part, it gets many of the sentences and words correct but it’s not perfect. Depending on how your friends and family leave voicemails, the transcribed message could look like it was written by a 5-year old.
So what’s revolutionary about this new feature? Well, it gives us the option to skip the most annoying part of voicemails, calling your inbox and deleting them. I find calling my inbox one of the most annoying things about using a phone. Google takes that and simplifies it by allowing me to delete, read, listen or respond through text to any voicemail left on my Google Voice number. Another useful feature is sending spam callers straight to voicemail. Google Voice lets you tag numbers and when they call, it’ll go straight to voicemail, which you can delete at your own leisure, without having to listen to them when you call your inbox.
This feature is also great for those spam calls asking to renew your car insurance or some other BS. For some it could even end up becoming a nice feature to combat stalkers or ex-partners you don’t want to hear from again. Google hasn’t announced when it’ll go public (still invite only) with Voice but when it does, it can be a very valuable tool for users. Of course it would help if Apple let the official Google Voice app through to its app store, so all iPhone users can enjoy these benefits.
Can Google Voice make voicemails a popular functions once again? We’ll have to wait and see but right now, the features are much better than what my current phone and plan offers.
