It seems like the largest cell phone manufacturer and software provider will be joining together to bring desktop applications to the handsets. Today, Microsoft and Nokia announced a partnership to bring Microsoft Office and other related software to the Symbian software, which Nokia implements in their cell phone and smartphones.
Microsoft’s Office software has never been implemented in any other mobile platform other than their Windows Mobile platform. It’s a big step for Microsoft, opening up their office suites to another mobile operating system. On top of Nokia already using Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync on their smartphones, now the following Office products will be available on Nokia smartphones:
- Microsoft Office Mobile: the ability to view, edit, create and share Office documents with mobile versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote
- Microsoft SharePoint Server: Mobile access to intranet and extranet portals
- Microsoft System Center: Enterprise device management.
- Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile: Enterprise instant messaging and presence designed for conferencing and collaboration
The Nokia E-Series will have the new Office solutions and will trickle down to the other Nokia smartphones. Nokia is currently the global leader in handset manufacturing, 45 percent hold over its competitors.
Both, Microsoft and Nokia acknowledged they’ll still be competitors in the smartphone sector but will continue to work together in the future if projects benefit both companies.
This deal makes both Microsoft and Nokia stronger in the global market. When asked if Apple should be worried about this deal, Nokia’s VP for devices said “if any company should be worried about this, it should be RIM.”
Look out RIM, Nokia is gunning for your spot, you better look over your shoulder.
