Narcissism is going to a whole new level with the new Samsung ST550 and ST500 digital cameras. Not only do these cameras have the standard screen but they also have a 1.5 inch screen on the front for self-absorbed users to take pictures of themselves. Of course, the only exception that can be made is if they want to take a group shot, but how many of those do people really take? Other than the screen on the front, the cameras have a standard 3.5 inch screen and a 12-megapixel sensor.
Another unnecessary feature on this camera would have to be the animation that the front screen plays to keep kids from looking away from the camera. This feature is obviously trying to make some use out of a screen that has no real purpose but to pick up the dirty fingerprints of all of the people that take pictures. The Samsung ST550 and ST500 are projected for release in SIngapore by the end of this month (be thankful it’s not coming to the states, yet). Expect tons of new, MySpace pictures of little kids posing by themselves. Sigh….
If you want to read thorough reviews of the cameras, Dvice and CrunchGear have some thorough reviews of the product.
Devin Coldewey from CrunchGear:
This will be nice for those self-portraits in the bar, or when you don’t want to ask someone to take a picture, I guess. And the screen can display something entertaining for your kid while you’re trying to take a picture. As if their mother or father, hanging over them with a strange object and smiling madly isn’t entertaining enough!
Dvice has a much more detailed review of the camera.
Samsung made the TL225 simple to use — just tap the front screen to turn it on. The quality of the front LCD is a little sketchy, especially compared to the comparatively glorious 3.5-inch one on the back. But then again, this front screen is really there just to help with composition, not for picture viewing, so that’s OK. Navigating the menus on the backside touchscreen was fairly intuitive; after you’ve used it for a couple of minutes, you’ll be flying.
