These past few months have not been good for Apple at all. Not only are they being investigated by the FCC for rejecting the Google App but yesterday there were reports that the SEC was now investigating insider trading of Apple stocks. This is all on top of recent cases of exploding iPhones and iPod Touches floating around in the news.

We’ve been hearing a lot about them and have gathered 8 cases of exploding iPhones, iPod Touches and iPods that have been reported to the news or an outlet that’s recorded the incidents. Of course there are possibly hundreds of other cases that went unreported or swept under the rug by people.

- A man’s trousers were set on fire by an exploding 1st generation iPod Nano in Hartsfield-atlanta Jackson International Airport. Apple promised him a replacement.

Danny Williams of Douglasville, GA had his first-generation iPod nano ignite in his pocket while he was working at a kiosk in the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. “So I look down and I see flames coming up to my chest,” said Williams. “I’m still kind of freaked out that after only a year and a half my iPod caught fire in my pocket.”

- A Belgian boy’s iPhone imploded when he put it to his ear to make a call. The boy was not injured, however, he did suffer from severe headaches directly related to the incident.

Today, Belgian website De Redactie related the case of one Salvatore from Liege who claimed his iPhone exploded in his hand as he was making a call.

“Happily, the explosion happened inside [the phone],” he said.

The phone’s display was left “completely black”, Salvatore said. His hand suffered no harm, he said, but he suffered from headaches for some days afterward.

- A mother in Ohio began court proceedings after an iPod touch exploded in her son’s pocket and gave him second degree burns.

According to the complaint filed in the court, the mother stated that on Dec. 4, while sitting at a desk in class at school, her son “heard a loud pop and immediately felt a burning sensation in his leg,” and he “realized his Apple iTouch (sic) had exploded and caught on fire in his pocket.” He “immediately ran to the bathroom and took off his burning pants with the assistance of a friend”. His iPod Touch had burned through his pants pocket and melted through his Nylon/Spandex underwear, and burnt his leg.

- Ken Stanbourough from Liverpool claims that after he dropped his daughter’s ipod, it began hissing and popped up in the air in a puff of smoke. Apple gave them a replacement but tried to keep the incident a secret.

Ken Stanborough, 47, from Liverpool, dropped his 11-year-old daughter Ellie’s iPod Touch last month. “It made a hissing noise,” he said. “I could feel it getting hotter in my hand, and I thought I could see vapour”. Mr Stanborough said he threw the device out of his back door, where “within 30 seconds there was a pop, a big puff of smoke and it went 10ft in the air”.

Mr Stanborough contacted Apple and Argos, where he had bought the device for £162. After being passed around several departments, he spoke to an Apple executive on the telephone. As a result of the conversation, Apple sent a letter to Mr Stanborough denying liability but offering a refund.

- Dutch man claims that after he left his iphone to charge in the car, the iPhone caught fire and burned a basketball sized hole in his car seat.

The damage is so extensive it looks as though the iPhone was dropped by an astronaut, survived re-entry and smashed into the car like a meteor. Needless to say, I am immediately inclined to drop this in the “phony” file—although I applaud the over-the-top imagery.

- 80 year old Pensioner from Paris Suburbs says his iPhone screen cracked into pieces in his hand a week after he bought it. Apple refused to believe his story but eventually replaced his iPhone.

In the latest French incident, Rolland Caufman, a pensioner from the Paris suburb of Noisy-le-Sec, says his iPhone screen broke up on July 21, the week after he bought it.

“I went out shopping, with my iPhone in my left pocket, when I suddenly felt it heat up and start vibrating — even though I never use the vibrate setting.

“I took it out of my pocket and held it to my ear — and saw the screen crack up like a car windscreen,” he told AFP.

- 26 year old security guard’s iPhone exploded while texting his girlfriend

The latest report comes from Yassine Bouhadi, a 26-year-old security guard from Villevieille, near Nimes, who says: “I was texting my girlfriend like I do every day when the phone made a noise like ’schplok’. A little bit of screen hit me in the eye and I had to remove it with a tweezer”.

- Boy’s eye injured by girlfriend’s exploding iPhon”>exploding iPhone

A French teenager has been injured by his girlfriend’s, little more than a week after Apple was accused of trying to suppress news of an exploding iPod Touch.

According to the AFP, Marie-Dominique Kolega contacted Apple after her son was hit by a flying piece of Jobsian status symbol. Apparently, the iPhone made a hissing noise before the screen shattered, sending shards through the air. “My son was frightened but he did not lose an eye,” Kolega told AFP.

Makes you think twice before buying an iPod.

It seems to be happening mostly with the 3GS. The 3G seems fine.
