Looks Twitter won’t be a part of some of the major sporting events this year. Yesterday, the NFL said players or their representatives are not allowed to use social media, mainly Twitter, during the game, but it’s okay before and after games. Today, we find out that the US Open will not allow players to communicate with the outside world through social media. Both have their reasons, obviously.

For the NFL, players are paid millions to focus on the game, not their Twitter tweets and so it makes sense to ban players from playing with their phones, while they should be focused on the game. But that’s not it. While Twittering has become extremely popular with NFL players, some players have been fine for criticizing the team. San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Comartie was fined $2,500 for complaining about the food service at training camp. On the Tennis, it’s a slightly different story.

The US Open, like many prestigious Tennis events, do not allow players to communicate with people in the outside world during a tournament to maintain a level of secrecy. They don’t want “inside information” shared with the rest of the world. That’s fair enough but player who Twitter are pretty angry. Andy Rodick had this to say about the situation:

“I think its lame the U.S. Open is trying to regulate our tweeting. I understand the on-court issue, but not sure they can tell us if we can. I definitely respect the rule about inside info and on court, but u would seriously have to be a moron to send ‘inside info’ through a tweet”

Looks like, we won’t be getting “inside info” from any of these venues. I guess we’ll just to resort to reading Tweets about their dull lives.
