We currently in a digital age but one school is taking it to the next level. Cushing Academy, a Boston prep school, is redesigning their entire library, and turning it digital to keep up with the times. The school is updating its library by getting rid of all the books and replacing it with three flat screen televisions, a coffee bar, eighteen eReaders, and laptops. According to James Tracy, the headmaster, books are “outdated technology.”

While Tracy may be right, books are outdated technology, completely getting rid of them is probably not the smartest move. To fill a library with a few laptops, 18 eReaders (only 18?! WTF) and some TVs are not going to help kids do actual research. Books are always going to have the best source of information for any kind of research and its extremely easy to cheat and write a paper using online sources. I’m always for schools to adopt the latest technology but whenever I needed to do actual research, the library was always the best option. There are some things in books, that are just not available online. Hopefully other schools don’t follow this trend, but you never know. Schools will do anything to attract new students and the parents’ checkbook.

Novel idea I guess, but why only 18?

I was actually thinking about that as well but couldn’t figure it out. Maybe the school has a ratio or can’t go over their budget. Either way, it really doesn’t make much sense.
