I have to give Dell a lot of credit. They never give up even when they churn out flops. On Wednesday, Dell gave us a peek at their new Dell Adamo XPS, an Apple Macbook Air competitor. For those of you don’t remember, Dell has already released an Adamo laptop, which obviously didn’t do well. The new Adamo will be 0.65 (10mm) thick, which is the exact same spec as the Macbook Air, but I’ve been wondering, what is Dell really trying to accomplish with the Adamo?
It’s obvious Dell is taking a shot at Apple’s Macbook Air, but with the price of their Adamo line, not to mention Dell’s reputation as a cheaper computer manufacturer, it’s going to be hard. Let’s assume Dell keeps the current price tag on the Adamo for their new Adamo XPS ($1,499), they’d be sharing price tags with Apple and hoping to topple Apple’s allure and reputation for higher end products, never a good sign as many other companies have tried and failed.
Dell tried this very same tactic during the release of their first Adamo and didn’t fair too well. For Dell to even compete against the Air, they need a device with similar specs (which they now should have) but for a much lower price. Apple has been cutting the prices on their Macbook line, and probably will make another cut once the Tablet is introduced, so Dell needs to come up with a solid device but offer it for much cheaper. Consumers are willing to pay for higher end products if they work, just not for Dell products, especially when they can it from Apple for the same price.
Dell might also consider getting Windows 7 on the new Adamo line, anything but that would be total failure on the part of Dell.
