Last week Motorola introduced their new social networking phone with a new software to take advantage of all its functionalities. Motorola is hoping the new phone, the Cliq (maybe going after a cliquey social networking crowd?) will be the beginning to their resurgence to the top. Motorola has fallen from the top as the number one and they need something big. But the Cliq isn’t the only thing that’s new on Motorola’s end, they also have a new software called Blur.

The Blur software is designed to make all the major social networking sites available in one place, have the ability to update them all at once and even has social networking components embedded in the address book and email program. Not only is it risky for Motorola to focus an entire phone to social networking, creating a new software is risky for Motorola as well. They’ve never been known to create great software but with companies like Google, Palm and Apple leading the way with innovative software and reaping the rewards, Motorola is hedging their bets that Blur will make some sort of dent among the flocks of people who want all their social networking sites in one place.

It’s a risk the company needs to take if they want to climb back into the cell phone manufacturing business. Currently they’re fourth in overall cell phone manufacturing behind Nokia, Samsung, and LG. They’ve also been surpassed by Apple and RIM, makers of the Blackberry, in the fast growing smartphone department.
