This past week Facebook released a new feature, very similar to Twitter’s tagging service, where you can attach @ with a user’s name and they’ll be notified of the tag. This obviously begs the question, is Facebook trying to be more like Twitter? Many will argue and say yes they are but it won’t happen.

Since Facebook’s initial launch (I’ve had my account since the old days when almost everyone “poked” each other and it was a service promoted by Facebook), I’ve seen Facebook transform into a community that doesn’t want its information shared with the public. More and more Facebook users are taking advantage of the new privacy features to secure their online account. Gone are the days when you can stalk your classmate on FB. The more I talk to people, the more I get the sense that they don’t want to share their pictures, videos and even thoughts, with the world other than the ones on their friends list. It’s a growing concern among Facebook users, one that Twitter users don’t concern themselves with.

Twitter users don’t mind sharing their thoughts, beliefs, daily activities and even personal stories. And they don’t have to concern themselves with personal information other than the ones they want to share with their followers. There are no pictures to worry about, no videos, no stalkers, etc. Facebook would like to be a little more like Twitter but it’s always going to be a private party because the users will never allow it to be a public showcase.
