It doesn’t seem like Twitter will be adopting an advertising scheme anytime soon to bring in revenue. Despite a lack of a revenue model, 20% Twitter users are mentioning brand names and are looking for brand information on Twitter. The research comes out of Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology.

The fact that Tweets contain brand names is not really surprising. It’s basically very similar to the way we communicate face to face, except we don’t realize the emphasis we put on the brand name or how many times we actually mention the brand. Penn State’s College of Information Sciences and Technology looked at over a million tweets to gather his data but it is very important data, one that Twitter could possibly use to monetize tweets in the future.

Unlike Facebook, Twitter has become a great marketing tool for companies to sell their products or for customer service. It’s extremely easy to gather hundreds of friends and a snap to respond to their needs and questions, so to hear that 1 in 5 are mentioning a brand name is not that surprising. It’s obvious, while Twitter does not take advantage of the brand names being thrown around on their site, the customers are eager to learn and interact with these brands. Now if only Twitter could find a way to make money from this, they’d solve some of their revenue problems.
