Sony introduced new music players yesterday to help gain some traction on Apple’s iPod line, but does it really have a chance even though it looks like an amazing music device? Sony is hoping the recent news that their Walkman line outsold the iPod in Japan, for the first time in four years, can propel them ahead to sell even more Walkman music players. Their latest devices have offer some pretty neat features:
- Slim profile: only 7.2mm thin
- Subscription service for lyrics that come on screen
- OLED screen
- Noise canceling technology
- Compatible with Apple iTunes content management software
Sony’s looking to sell over 6.7 million Walkman devices but with Apple introducing new devices this past week, it may get tougher for Sony to continue the pace and outsell the iPod this upcoming year. Sony has one feature that the iPod does not over, a feature Sony is banking on to make their mark with the Walkman line. That feature is the Walkman’s ability to “talk” to other devices. The Walkman has the ability to pull songs and videos from the Playstation 3, Blu-ray DVD recorders, and even play video pulled from portable DVD players. The Walkman also works with TV sets with the ability to show lyrics on the TV screen.
The problem with these features is that Sony is not promoting it well enough. Yesterday’s release did not touch on this important feature much. Sony’s direction with their music player seems to be very different than that of Apple’s. Apple last week introduced a camera on their popular Nano line. Apple music players are becoming more and more picture/video friendly. Both are fighting it out in Japan and Sony is hoping they come out on the winning end by targeting music crazed Japanese teens with these new features.
The new Sony Walkman series of music players will only be available in Japan and starts out at 8GB for $170 with the higher end model, 64GB for $400.
