Last week, I was hoping and tweeting, there should be a Hulu app for the iPhone so I can watch all the shows returning for the fall, when I’m not near my computer. Of course, there’s rumors floating of a possible Hulu iPhone app but today there was some good news for some iPhone fans, Netflix will be releasing an iPhone, just not right away.
During the announcement of the $1 million movie recommendation prize, Netflix’s CEO Reed Hastings said once the exclusive deal between Netflix-360 is over, they’ll be targeting all gaming consoles, with an iPhone app coming out soon after.
It’s a strategy Netflix is hoping will help continue their domination in the DVD rental market. While Netflix says an iPhone app is eventually coming, they should come out with one soon, very soon. Right now the iPhone is hot and there’s no better time to take advantage of all the people who are looking to jump on board Netflix. Netflix could use the very same strategy Apple used to sell their computers, the iPhone.
The iPhone was the gateway for many to buying a Mac. Netflix can sell hardware for other companies that will stream Netflix to the TV for new users. What better way to get users hooked on Netflix, than to launch a new iPhone app, give them a taste and then have them buy hardware for the home.
I canceled my Netflix subscription a few months ago, after getting rid of my laptop and not being able to make time to watch the DVD’s and streaming video. But had their been an iPhone app, I’m certain I would have kept my subscription. Sometimes it’s difficult to make time to watch something but if it’s handy and convenient, then it’s that much easier to use.
Netflix CEO may want to release an iPhone app after targeting gaming consoles, Blu-ray DVD players, and televisions, but mobile smartphones are hot right now and there’s no better time to take advantage of it. I say Netflix should release an iPhone app ASAP, it could be a great alternative until Hulu finally releases their own. I’d get my Netflix subscription back in a heartbeat if a Netflix iPhone app were available.
