Apple seems to be in the news alot today. Here’s another, but this time it’s about their small war against the Palm Pre.

When the Palm Pre first launched, the developers, some of them which were previous Apple employees, put in a code that made iTunes think it was syncing with an iPod and allowed iPod syncing capabilities. Apple quickly caught on and released an update that removed the feature. Palm responded with an update that allowed the syncing once again. It went back and forth like this for some time before Palm decided to take the matter to USB Implementary Forum, saying Apple is violating the principle of open connectivity. The USB-IF responded today, in favor of Apple, making Palm feel like an idiot for bringing it to the Forum in the beginning.

This basically means that Apple can continue it’s closed iPod platform while telling Palm to F**k off. Palm has seven days to respond to this inquiry and explain why they decided to implement code that “tricks” iTunes and if they do it again, they’ll be in direct violation of USB-IF rules. Looks like Palm bit the bullet on this one. They brought this to the USB-IF and now have to face the consequences.

While I don’t agree that Apple should continue to have a closed platform with its iTunes software and iPod devices, Palm was wrong for trying to trick iTunes into thinking their Palm Pre was really an iPod. It’s been an extremely amusing back and forth banter between the two companies, one that I’m actually sad to see end. Ah it was fun while it lasted. I wonder if Palm will continue to try other methods to make their Palm devices sync with iTunes? We’ll have to wait and see.
