The Motorola ROKR E1 was Apple’s first foray into the cellular phone market back in the day when Macs still had PowerPC processors and the Motorola Razr was the most popular handset. It was basically a candybar phone made by Motorola that had an iTunes player and the ability to sync to the iTunes desktop client.

Leading up to its launch in September 2005, there was a lot of buzz surrounding Apple’s collaboration with Motorola; but when the device actually landed, it was a complete dud. People found that the interface is extremely slow and clumsy, the 100 song limit makes any iPod much better, and the overall feature set didn’t really stand out from other phones on the market. I have actually only seen a dozen or so in the wild.

I find it pretty funny Steve Jobs himself introduced it as the “iTunes Phone” back in 2005. This high profile failure is an utter contrast with what can be considered the true iTunes Phone, the iPhone. Check out the video, it is mighty entertaining.
