The new deal between Verizon and Google is supposed to “”deliver leading-edge mobile applications, services and devices.” In other words, it’ll bring Google’s OS and applications over to Verizon’s 3G network. The phones may be similar to the phones HTC has created with Google’s Android serving as the OS.
Everyone in their right mind knows this deal was created to compete with Apple and AT&T. While Google and Verizon will be hoping to create an open network, but there may be some limitations because of Verizon’s previous track record. Verizon is notorious for including their OS in phones, crippling the phone. While that may not be the case here, since Google will obviously be including their Android OS in the phones, Verizon may still want some apps or functions disabled. This is no different than what AT&T did by asking Apple not to include some Apps in their App Store.
While this new deal may be in response to the current Apple/AT&T deal, it could also be because recent reports surfaced that said Verizon no longer wants the Palm Pre on their network. They need something to compete with Apple/AT&T, so hooking up with Google seems like the next logical step. Of course this also could mean that Verizon and Apple probably won’t be working on a future iPhone/Tablet, unless something changes in the next year or so, after the AT&T/Apple agreement ends. That may not be good news for Verizon customers who were waiting for news about the iPhone landing on the Verizon network.
Verizon’s biggest statement against Apple and AT&T seems to be that, they’ll definitely be supporting Google Voice on the Android phones, which seemed like the beginning of the end of the Google/Apple relationship. The two Android phones that were supposed to be on the Verizon network in two weeks, just may be these two in this picture.
