When I first heard about the International Kindle, the first question that came to my head was “will this have free internet access all over the globe?” Well, my question has been answered.
No. The International Kindle won’t have web browsing outside the U.S. I have a regular U.S. Kindle and being able to browse Wikipedia or catch up on Reddit is actually pretty convenient. I was really hoping that this new international edition would allow browsing outside the U.S., but it is pretty understandable why it lacks that feature. As Wired’s Gadget Lab points out, Amazon has to pay AT&T for service. AT&T probably passes on huge roaming charges for Kindle use internationally.
Let’s just hope that the Amazon will eventually partner with carriers in Europe and other continents so that the Kindle will be truly international.
