Not sure if you’ve heard the latest rumors but apparently Veriozon’s CEO, Lowell McAdams has been paying Steve Jobs’ Apple headquarter visits the past few months, apparently because Verizon is working on a CDMA version of the iPhone.
This could only mean 2 things, Verizon is teasing customers again or things are pretty bad in AT&T land that Apple is looking for another wireless carrier to become the exclusive carrier of the iPhone. Or maybe Apple is thinking about expanding their customer base by offering it on the Verizon network?
If Apple were to bring the iPhone to Verizon, AT&T better hope they still get the GSM version of the phone for a number of reasons.
1. Although they’d lose exclusivity on the iPhone, they’ll still have a high end product, and may still be able to get new customers or keep existing ones.
2. They could still be the only GSM carrier in the states, which may still be attractive to people, especially because it’ll be easier to swap SIM cards to and from the iPhone.
For Verizon, it makes sense in so many ways. They’d have the hottest smartphone in the market for the past few years, provide the best nationwide coverage (have you seen the latest commercials?), bring back the customers that left the and finally provide an amazing phone without the crippled Verizon OS (assuming Verizon lets Apple use the iPhone OS).
The customers and Apple will be the big winners if Apple brings an iPhone to the Verizon network and still allows AT&T to keep the iPhone. Here’s how:
- Apple gets to expand their user base and gets millions more to use the iPhone. Most Verizon customers will gladly sign up for the chance to own an iPhone (many AT&T customers left Verizon for the iPhone).
- It may open up the possibility for Apple creating another phone other than the iPhone for AT&T, Verizon or another network. Maybe a “Lite” version of the iPhone for other carriers.
- Competition between the two wireless carriers may help bring down prices for iPhone phone and data packages. It’s one of the reasons why many have not bought an iPhone, because of the forced data plan.
I’m all for Verizon getting the iPhone, just because of the options in wireless carriers, and of course, possible cheaper data plans because of the competition.
