Google, the company that continues to innovate and make things easier (albeit asking for your information almost all the time) has now introduced a free turn-by-turn GPS navigation system in their new Android 2.0 software.
The software will first be available on the Motorola Droid, which will be available on the Verizon Wireless network for customers to buy on November 6th, for $199 after rebates with a two-year contract. Here are the features of the GPS navigation service offered by Google (and a video):
- Up-to-date map data: Automatically includes latest map data from Google, which is constantly being refined by Google and by users submitting corrections
- Plain English search: Locate destinations by entering business business name or landmark; no address needed
- Voice search: Speak destinations and Google Maps Navigation will automatically interpret and plot routes
- Live traffic data: Indicator warns of upcoming traffic issues
- Search along route: Find businesses along path of travel
- Satellite view: 3D view of route to aid in understanding directions
- Street View: first-person perspective of route and destination images
Here’s the preview video:
According to Macrumors, Google and Apple are also working together to bring this new feature to the iPhone. If Google were to continue expanding their new GPS Navigation system to smartphones like the iPhone, it may make apps like the TomTom navigation system obsolete, or at least make someone think twice before spending hundreds of dollars on TomTom, when it’s being offered for free from Google. If it comes to the iPhone, it’ll make a lot of people happy, especially those thinking about getting the TomTom app.
