MIT researchers are doing something pretty interesting to help out the Boston Red Sox. They’ve been putting smart phone sensors on every single player of the Boston Red Sox, in order to understand what kind of physical force they create when they swing, run, and throw. This way, the Sox’s physicians and trainers will be able to measure the degree and force of when a player is doing well or is on his downtime. This will give the trainers statistics on how to improve their overall game and change accordingly with these stats. More »
CTIA holds an industry survey a couple times a year to gauge the health of the mobile industry and they just released the results of their latest survey. According to the survey wireless data service revenue hit more than $19.4 billion for the first half of 2009, a 31% increase over this time last year. That is probably due to increased sales of smartphones. More »
Oh lookey here. Amazon is planning to take the Kindle DX overseas, after the Kindle makes its splash soon. There is currently no word on pricing or availability, although the DX will be available next year. This lets Amazon tap into other markets and try and establish themselves as the number one ereader manufacturer overseas. We’ll just have to wait and see how it goes.

RIM is going white with their Blackberry Bold. According to Engadget, RIM has released a white Blackberry Bold on the T-Mobile network, with a AT&T device coming in mid-October.
While I’m not too sure about carrying around a white phone, it may sell. Similar to the Apple iPhone in white, it could be the alternative many want. I had a white iPhone and it was dirty within a week, so expect similar problems for the Blackberry devices. But it is a nice alternative for those interested in an all-white Blackberry.
Hospitals are where millions of lives are saved everyday, so shouldn’t they be the ones that are the most technologically advanced? That’s a question that the government asked when they supplied hospitals nationwide $30 Billion Stimulus dollars to switch to electronic records instead of the good old pen and paper. They are also offering doctors bonus payments if they cross the finish line to electronic by 2011. This is going to be hard on the hospitals, the government, and the doctors themselves but going in without a plan is just asking for chaos. So, here are three IT systems that are currently being tested in hospitals nationwide: More »
Walt Mossberg just recently posted a glowing review of Windows 7. He’s notorious for loving everything Mac and bashing everything Microsoft. Some say he is biased, some say he is right. Regardless, his positive review of Microsoft’s new operating system is something out of the ordinary. He pointed out quite a few areas in which Windows shines and even some where it is downright superior to Mac OS. He even went on to say: More »
TV lovers might (keep reading) jump for joy when they hear that a device completely dedicated to streaming live TV, has been released. The Mobile Flo TV is a device that streams live TV straight to the palm of your hand and displays it on a 3.5 inch screen, with 4:3 capacitive touch screen capabilities and built-in stereo speakers. Unfortunately, the device only carries pre-programmed channels and can only stream these channels so you’re out of luck if you don’t watch CNBC, Comedy Central, MSNBC, MTV, NBC, NBC 2 GO, NBC News, and Nickelodeon. Today at Tokyo’s CEATEC, Sony announced the arrival of their newest ultrathin laptop, the Viao X. It packs the usual mix of wifi, bluetooth and webcam, 3G HSPA mobile broadband and a solid state drive all in a sleek aluminum and carbon fiber enclosure.
It weighs 655g and is 13.9mm thin. That is a good 40% thicker that the new Dell Adamo XPS Dell teased us with today, but who really cares? They are both extremely underpowered, containing Intel Atom processors. Sure they are the new Atoms, but it is still now excuse. These are top of the line laptops that utilize exotic materials and techniques in their productions. Therefore, they should come with power to match. More »
Dell seems to be in the tech spotlight today, focusing especially on design rather than functionality. First with the press release of their new Adamo and now their designer laptops with designs ranging from baseball to nail polish. Dell has cut deals with the MLB association and OPI, an international nail polish and fashion company to create nail polish and baseball oriented designer laptops.
This is all part of the Dell Design Studio, which allows you to add on anything on your laptop that’s related to baseball or nail polish. Dell’s event had no mention of any specs today, instead focusing all on design, which seemed to be the theme of the event. As you can see in the image (Dell Laptop with Swarovski crystals), there is no limit in the imagination of the user, they can put whatever Dell has available right on the lid of your laptop. Check out more images of Dell’s crazy designer creations after the break. More »
Dell has finally given us a glimpse of their new Adamo XPS. Dell is looking to compete with the Macbook Air’s thin profile and lightweight structure with their own. The Adamo is only 9.99 millimeters thick and has a very similar body structure to the Macbook Air.
Although the slim profile is amazing, Dell seems to be banking on it too much. Users care about the functionality of the machine just as much as the design. Earlier today, Senior Vice President of Dell’s Consumer Product Group, Alex Gruzen, held up the Adamo to a room full of reporters who were absolutely amazed by its size. Along with the press release, Gruzen mentioned that the computer was going to be one of those things people lust after. He shouldn’t make such statements until tests on speed and usability are measured. Until then, check out the press release of the Adamo from Dell and an extra snapshot. More »
Just today, there have been two big reports regarding the Android mobile platform. First, Sprint announced the arrival of a new Android handset, the Samsung Moment. It will feature a AMOLED touchscreen, slide out keyboard and 3.2 megapixel camera. Second, the Wall Street Journal just reported that Dell might be building an Android mobile phone for AT&T. This news comes right after Verizon strikes a deal with Google to bring Android handsets to its service.
So, you can see, Android is quickly become a hot topic. I think that in the long term, it could potentially dethrone the iPhone to become the most widespread mobile platform and I’ve got a couple reasons why. More »
The guys over at Akihabara News snapped some photos of concept phones at Fujitsu’s Booth in this year’s CEATEC (Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies). The one pictured above is the KORA bracelet PC phone.
My particular favorite was the pen phone. It has a real Dick Tracy detective/spy feel to it. Too bad they are all concepts. I wouldn’t mind having a phone shaped like a soap dish. Go check out the whole gallery of photos.
Macs are great in many ways They’re built on a solid UNIX foundation, they run amazing applications, and it can run Windows. No wonder 12% of households in the US own a Mac. Last year, NPD group reported that only 9% of the households in America own a Mac. From then until now, that number has shot up to 12% and still rising.
That is an amazing figure if you think of the sales since the last quarter which have increased drastically. Unfortunately, with the good news comes some bad, 85% of households with a Mac also own a Windows based PC. Now, this isn’t a concern for Apple unless Windows based PC sales begin to skyrocket and that doesn’t seem likely with their lack of innovation although Windows 7 could change that. More »
Amazon is cutting the price on their Kindle device again, the second time in 3 months. This time the price cut is $40, and down to $259:
“Kindle has revolutionized the way we purchase and read books, by making it mobile, easy and intuitive,” said Randall Stephenson, chairman and chief executive officer of AT&T. “We are excited to work with Amazon to help readers access books even faster and from significantly more places than ever before, including more than 100 countries and territories around the world through AT&T’s global wireless coverage.”
