China Unicom is sinking into a pool of customer complaints and WiFi functionality. Reuters reported this morning that China Unicom has signed up only 5,000 users since their launch last week. Despite the lack of WiFi and the poor usability of the device overseas, Chairman Chang Xiobing still seems enthusiastic about getting it out to more customers with the launch of its 3G network, which has quickly picked up 1 million customers.

Xiobing also reported that China Unicom is looking at an increased sales revenue for the 4th quarter although costs for the company may increase due to iPhone subsidies and advertising which may lead to decreased profits. The lack of WiFi functionality and the high costs soured the Unicom deal for many interested customers who are now opting in for an unlocked iPhone imported from other countries. It seems the iPhone isn’t doing as good as people thought it would be overseas.
