Unless you live in another planet and don’t read any online news, then you probably haven’t heard that Google is planning to release their own phone next year. While it’s great news for consumers, who will get another competitor in the already competitive smartphone market, today brings more news that Google may want to be it’s own wireless service provider, in an unique way.
According to reports from TechCrunch, Google might be planning to introduce a data only, VoiP capable phone, with AT&T providing the data service. Couple the data service with Google Voice and you have an amazing user experience. When Google finally does release their phone they still need to have certain things that will sell their product. While the Droid has been doing extremely well for Motorola and Verizon, it still didn’t sell anything close to the number of iPhone 3GS’ sold (over 1.5 million) on opening weekend. For Google to change this, they need to do a few things.
1. Design a sleek phone
One of the reasons why people flock to the iPhone is because it looks sexy. Men and women both love the look and feel of the device and when compared to some of the other smartphones in the market, it’s almost night and day in terms of looks and design. Nothing beats the smooth glass, glossy curved back with very nice attention to detail.
2. Music Player
We all know the iPod is king when it comes to music players, but in order to attract some of the masses, there needs to be a much better music player in Android devices. It’s like Google completely forgot that people listen to music and that they don’t want to listen to it if it’s not going to work properly. Come on Google, step up your game!
3. Integrate Google Voice
For those of you who don’t have Google Voice, you are totally missing out. It’s one of the best features Google has to offer and they need to use it in their own phone. Tie it in with the data plans and you’ve got yourself a phone service without any need for a wireless carrier to provide a voice plan. Plus the transcribe feature with voicemail forwarding can really change things in the industry.
4. Allow Openness
If Google wants to spread it’s phone out to the masses, the best thing would be to allow any wireless carrier to be the wireless data provider without tying themselves down with one (rumors are suggesting AT&T is bidding to become the wireless data provider).
These are some of the simple and basic things that Google can do to make their phone the new “it” phone. With Google’s software prowess, they can shake the industry if they can only design an amazing phone. We’re a society that wants things that look great, same thing goes for our electronic gadgets, including smartphones.
