Looks like Psystar, the company that was making Apple clones aka “Hackintoshes” may no longer be around. According to a report by Apple Insider, a motion hearing has been set for December 14th, to decide the fate of Psystar. All signs point to an Apple victory.
While this is a victory for Apple, it may be a loss for consumers. Those looking for a cheaper version of Apple’s OS X no longer have the option to buy a Psystar machine or get software to install Mac OS X on hardware other than Apple’s. While no one is really sure how many “Hackintosh” models Pystar sold, they still made news in the tech world for standing up to Apple and trying to change the current Apple model, bundled software with only their hardware.
Also reported in the Apple Insider post, was that Psystar lost more money than they gained by cloning Macs and have no more than $50,000 in assets. That’s not enough to pay for the damages that it may cause to the Apple brand, says Apple.
We’ll find out what happens to Psystar on December 14th and what they do after the decision but one thing is for sure, many were hoping that Pystar would eventually lead to Apple allowing their Mac OS X software to be available on other hardware. Looks like that won’t happen, and may be a warning for future companies that may want to attempt a similar feat.
Currently the Psystar site is still up and running.
