Just in time for the holidays, Sandia National Laboratories have introduced their newest photovoltaic cells to the holiday-loving’ public. Resembling snowflakes, these sparkly-cells are made of crystalline silicon by way of using common microelectronic and microelectromechanical systems techniques. These photovoltaic cells seem to be giving the standard solar cell a run for its money — they use 100 times less material but produce the same amount of energy as a solar cell.

What researchers are hoping of this photovoltaic cells is that they’ll be mass-produced on the cheap (Less effort to produce than the solar cell!). They also foresee that they’ll be used in tents or clothing for convenient cell phone charging. I really hope this happens soon!

Could you see yourself wearing a snowflake cell to recharge your tech gear?
