Since being uploaded four weeks ago, this funny but also slightly sad YouTube video has received nearly 1.8 million views. In it, Desi, a black man, cannot get HP’s facial recognition system to track his moments, yet his white colleague Wanda has no problems being scanned by the HP machine.
While this clip is meant to be fairly lighthearted, it has also generated some good (and some ridiculous) discussion about one of the touchiest subjects in America: race. This video reminds me so much of Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man…but for the 21st century.
Obviously, HP is concerned and has issued the following statement:
“HP has been informed of a potential issue with the facial-tracking software included on some of its systems, which appears to occur when insufficient foreground lighting is available. We take this seriously and are looking into it with our partners.”

Hmm, what if he wore a Jabbawockeez-like mask?
