“Green” phones seem to be the new trend nowadays. Motorola just recently released their W233 renew device, which boasted itself as the first certified carbon free cell phone on the market. One of my general complaints about this phone was the design of it. Well, it seems the cell phone gods have heard my cries, because Sony Ericsson just released its own set of “green” phones, and, I must say, they look sexy.
The Elm and Hazel are a set of candy bar and slider phones, respectively. Sony Ericsson claims that these phones reduce CO2 emissions by using recycled plastics, having a unique “e-manual,” being free from hazardous chemicals, having a low-power consumption charger, and having less packaging. In addition, the phones come preloaded with the Walk Mate Eco app, as well as a Green calculator. Both apps are designed to help users reduce their carbon footprints and to make their lifestyles more environmentally friendly.
Here are some more detailed phone specs (Elm/Hazel):
- 4.3 x 1.8 x 0.6 inches / 4.0 x 1.9 x 0.6 inches
- 3.2 oz / 4.2 oz
- 240 x 320 pixels (QVGA)
- Metal Black or Pearly Rose / Superior Black or Passionate Red
- 280 MB internal memory
- SanDisk microSD™ (up to 16GB)
- GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900
- UMTS/HSPA 900/2100
- 5 megapixel camera w/ 4x digital zoom
- MP3 player
- Bluetooth
So what do you guys think? Would you get these phones? If I was not already so attached to my smart phones, I would definitely consider them. For more details on the Elm and Hazel, check out the Elm and Hazel websites.

These look too much like the LG chocolate phones! Elm and Hazel are pretty interesting names for cell phones. I’d give them a shot if it means helping the planet out. Although…I just got a new phone -_-

I wonder how much greener a lot of these new tech really is, but I suppose that every little bit helps. Plus, if you advertise your gadget as being environmentally friendly, you gain extra cachet.
