“In my 28 years of attending the CES and participating in it and being a part of it and running it for most of that time, I can honestly say there will be more innovation at this show than any one in history,” Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, said.

Although the economic recession is affecting many, there is no doubt that this will be a big year for the ongoing technology boom of the last decade. According to CNN, here are some things to look out for in the upcoming year:

1. Tablets

Laptops are going out of style? WHAT? Well, maybe not so soon, but rumors that Apple will be unveiling a tablet device is driving people crazy. If and when Apple releases its device, it is predicted that many companies will begin to follow suit. So look forward to seeing some high-end tablets for sale this year. Start saving NOW if you want one because these babies are going to be expensive to start.

2. E-Readers

The launch of Amazon’s Kindle device marked a new revolution in reading and books. E-readers are slowly becoming more popular and more and more books are being digitized into e-book format. In 2010 expect improvements to the currently existing devices. Features such as wi-fi will become more and more abundant as the year progresses. (Wouldn’t it be a good idea if colleges used these instead of having students buy a whole bunch of expensive text books? Hopefully change will start occurring by the time I finish my undergrad studies and prepare for med school.)

3. Smart TVs

The product of putting the internet and a TV together is a Smart TV. The concept of making internet connected televisions has long been played around with, but CNN predicts that this year will be a big year for these new devices. Advances in technology have finally allowed for things such as this to come into a consumer price range.

4. Mobile TV
The switch from analog to digital TV opened up new doors for the world of television. One of these was the concept of Mobile TV. 2010 is the year to look out for devices that allow you to watch TV on the go!

5. 3D Media
The blue and red 3D images of the past are becoming obsolete as new technology emerges. In 2010, start expecting developments in 3D TV and video games. “In December, Blu-ray announced that it had arrived at a technology standard for producing content in three dimensions” (CNN.com).

6. Wi-fi enabled cars

In my previously published article, I talked about cars that allowed you to connect to the internet. Read up on it here.

7. Android. Android. Android.
With the recent release of Verizon’s Droid device, there has been a lot of attention directed at the Android OS. Expect more and more Android based devices to be released this year.

8. There’s definitely an app for that!
2010 will add to the already outrageous library of apps that you can choose from for your iPhone or smartphone. By the end of the year, expect there to be an app for, well, just about anything.
