“Nielsen delivers the most comprehensive picture of what and how people watch across television, online, mobile, radio, books and music. In 2010 we see a continuation, if not an acceleration, of current trends with consumers watching and connecting more.” A recent study from Nielsen took a “gadget pulse” on America and revealed how much technology has really penetrated into our everyday lives. Here are some facts and figures that I found especially profound:
Television
- 114.9 million US homes own at least one TV
- 29.9% of US homes own four or more TVs
- the average American watches 31.5 hours of TV a week
Cell phones
- 223 million cell phone users over the age of 13
- 18% of phones are smartphones
- 25% of phones sold in 2009 Q3 were smartphones (expected to rise to as high as 50% in 2010)
Internet
- 195 million internet users
- time spent on social networking sites has increased 227% since last year
- Twitter has grown 500% from year to year
Gaming
- 73% of Americans own a gaming system
- 45% of active gamers are female
