Big time corporation Google is considering shutting down its doors in China after a China-based “attack” on the Google databases. The attack was reportedly done to obtain information on the e-mail accounts of several Chinese human rights activists. This may be the straw that broke the camels back, as senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer for Google, David Drummond writes, “These attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered — combined with the attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the Web — have led us to conclude that we should review the feasibility of our business operations in China” (CNN.com).

Google has stated that it is no longer willing to allow censoring of its search results and intends to have a sit-down with the Chinese government in order to remove the censorship. If no agreement is reached, it is likely that Google will be shutting down its Google.cn portal.
