I’m allergic to cats. You’re allergic to peanuts. Okay. Well, a man in New Mexico claims he is allergic to electromagnetic fields. Not only does he claim to be allergic, but Arthur Firstenberg is also suing his neighbor Raphaela Monribot, claiming that her wi-fi use is preventing him from living in his own house. He backs up his claim by referencing doctor’s notes that mention his “sensitivity.” Firstenberg is currently sleeping in his car until the official court hearing so as not to agitate his allergies.
If I remember correctly from my AP Physics class, anything that creates a current creates an electromagnetic field. So, shouldn’t this guy be allergic to anything running on electricity? Good luck with that, man. According to a study conducted in 2005 in Germany:
The major study endpoint was the ability of the subjects to differentiate between real magnetic stimulation and a sham condition. There were no significant differences between groups in the thresholds, neither of detecting the real magnetic stimulus nor in motor response.
We found no objective correlate of the self perception of being “electrosensitive.” Overall, our experiment does not support the hypothesis that subjectively electrosensitive patients suffer from a physiological hypersensitivity to EMFs or stimuli.
Basically, the article suggests that “sensitivity” to electromagnetic fields is purely a psychological disorder. I’m going to go ahead and say that this guy either needs some psychological treatment or is trying to get some quick cash…or a combination of both. What do you think?
