A study in the United Kingdom by Leeds University has found a possible link between internet addiction and depression. Based on an online questionnaire complete by 1,319 individuals, the study found that most of the 1.2% that were identified as “internet addicts” were clinically depressed.

Extensive internet use may be a sign of emotional distress and social isolation. “If a web addict is substituting meaningful friendships and socialising with virtual contact on the internet, this might have an adverse affect on their mental well-being” (BBC).

While the study shows a link between depression and internet addiction, the researchers stress that the study does not show that one causes the other.
