In years past, people abhorred the idea of matchmaking services, but with the incredible reach of the internet, the efficiency of computers, and so many singles in the western (and eastern) world, websites like eHarmony and Match.com have generally gained social acceptance. If you are single this Valentine’s Day, why not seriously consider putting yourself on the market through these 5 top dating sites?

This list is based on number of users, popularity, and recognition rather than success rate or personal recommendation from me. The usual, common sense caveats apply: be honest, be cautious and safe, and be realistic.

1. eHarmony: the largest dating presence on the internet, eHarmony has become famous from commercial exposure. The company has branches in four different countries and specialized dating for different ethnic, religious, and age groups. eHarmony founder Dr. Neil Clark Warren has 35 years of marriage counseling and uses a scientific method that he calls the “Compatibility Matching System,” which takes “into account the 29 Dimensions of Compatibility.” On average, in the States, 236 eHarmony members marry everyday.

2. Match: having been around for about 15 years, Match is one of the oldest and most trusted dating services. Match uses the conventional “Facebook-like” system of profile updating and searching. One neat feature that Match offers is a “Daily 5″ list for users to cycle through. Those expressing interest in a possible match simply click a link, and there are no obligations on either end.

3. Matchmaker: another older site, Matchmaker is dedicated to a maturer crowd of 35+ singles who want a serious relationship, not just a passing fling. With over 8 million members, Matchmaker offers a wide selection pool. The ability to chat and message others casually makes Matchmaker a less daunting service than most.

4. Yahoo! Personals: while not as old as many other sites, Yahoo! Personals has a large membership and stresses safety. Every user must be screened and be a member before he/she can interact with others. Yahoo! Personals allows people to be fairly anonymous, but the screening measures that the company undertakes ensure that all (or at least most) members are who they claim to be. There is far less pressure for everyone involved when users do not have to describe every little tidbit about themselves to strangers.
