The Mobile World Congress is almost here, and rumors are flying left and right about what’s going down in Barcelona. Verizon has officially announced that it will be holding a joint conference with Skype on Tuesday, but no details have been divulged yet.
Speculators say that it is highly likely that Verizon will be trying to crack a deal with Skype to get Skype software on Verizon phones. This would allow people to make video calls over Verizon’s 3G network. With the reduction in the number of voice calls being made, companies are beginning to shift more towards plans that cater to data usage.
This could be a groundbreaking deal. Although AT&T already has Skype capabilities via wifi, no software has been developed yet that allows Skype calls over the 3G network. If Verizon makes this deal, it is likely that other phone companies will be following closely behind.
