Even though Google and Apple has had a rocky relationship over the past few years, Google’s mobile engineering executive Vic Gundotra insists that “Apple is a very close and valuable partner.” Recently, there was gossip that Steve Jobs flatly proclaimed privately that he “hates” Google CEO Eric Schmidt, whose company supposedly refrained from allowing multi-touch on its Nexus One so as not to anger Apple. Last week, an OTA update enabled Google’s smartphone to perform multi-touch in Google Maps, Browser, and Gallery.
Multi-touch has been pioneered by Apple for the iPod Touch and iPhone (soon the iPad too), but the technology is available on many other platforms. In addition to encroaching on Apple’s territory by entering the smartphone hardware (Nexus One) and software (Android) market, Google has been developing its Chrome Browser (Apple’s Safari), Chrome OS (OS X), Chrome tablet (iPad), Android tablet, a netbook, and other resources that tap into areas in which Apple already has a presence. While the media has rightly suggested that the two mega-corporations are at odds, some of the drama has probably been overplayed. Still, Apple did block Google Voice and the term “Android” from its App Store.
Speaking to Reuters, Gundotra tries to stabilize the heated situation: “we’re very excited about the relationship we have with [Apple] today. We have no reason to believe that’s going to change.”
Regarding the suggestion that Apple might replace Google with Bing as the main search engine for the iPhone, Gundotra states, “We don’t want to comment on those rumours. We think that relationship is stable.”
Take these comments however you like, but Google and Apple are definitely not just partners but fierce competitors too.
